Agreeing with God About the Holy Spirit
Dr RJ Sing
“But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
In the book of John, we find that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to His disciples and also to the church. Let us look at the following scripture in this regard: “15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”John 14:15-18.
In verse No. 16, Jesus uses the word Comforter. The Greek word Parakletos literally means ‘one called alongside to help’, hence the idea of a comforter. The Holy Spirit is called another comforter because this is one of Christ’s titles. (1 John 2:1; Translated ‘Advocate’)
The illustration is that our Heavenly Father is also known as the God of all Comfort. “Blessed [be] God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;”2 Corinthians 1:3. Though those in the early church often endured persecutions, they found their comfort in the Holy Spirit. (Acts 9:31). Today, you two can find comfort in the Holy Spirit when trials come. The word ‘another’ (Greek. Allon) stresses that the Holy Spirit would be ‘another’ like Jesus. So, allow Him to comfort and guide you in the affairs of life. He has been given to assist you in all things.
