Originally recorded as “The Kingdom of God Is at Hand”
Sermon outline
The kingdom of God is God's power, authority and anointing, available now and within your reach, and you operate it by growing in the Word, knowing who you are in Christ and speaking with holy audacity.
Main text
- Luke 4:18-22
- Mark 1:14-15
Opening
The recording begins with communion led by another minister and a time of worship. He then has the church greet one another and turns to Luke 4:18, saying he is continuing the message on 'the relationship between the kingdom of God and the anointing of God' and briefly recapping how Jesus read from Isaiah in the synagogue.
The free favours of God profusely abound: let it become real inside
Jesus came to proclaim the day when salvation and the free favours of God profusely abound. Before you see the manifestation, the truth must seep into your spirit and your subconscious, so that whatever your eyes and circumstances show you, there is a song inside. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, so a full heart begins to speak God's promises even when challenges are on every side.
“God's word must become a reality on the inside before it starts to be manifested in your life.”
- Luke 4:18-19
- Matthew 12:34
The Word is waiting for someone to give it voice
The Logos has inherent power and life in itself, but it lies dormant until a man or woman who has meditated on it gives it voice. To that person the Word becomes more real than what he sees outside, and he refuses to let any contrary report have power in his sphere of influence. Pain in the body? Say 'by His stripes I am healed'. When the Word leaves your mouth it begins to create and construct, and you will have what you say.
“The Word of God, the Logos of God, has in it inherent ability to cause changes, but it's waiting for a man or a woman to grab a hold of it and give voice to it.”
- Isaiah 53:5
- Mark 11:23
They gazed attentively at Him: anointed words
The people in the synagogue had seen Jesus before, so they did not stare because of His face or His clothes but because of the life-producing words coming out of His mouth. Their spirits had been waiting for someone to speak such words. These were not the wisdom of man, which is foolishness to God, but anointed words.
“The spirit man on the inside of them was waiting for a man to speak such words.”
- Luke 4:20-22
- 1 Corinthians 3:19
The kingdom of God is God's power, authority and anointing, now
Whenever you hear 'kingdom', replace it with God's power, God's authority (His sovereign rule over every circumstance of a believer's life) and God's anointing. It is not a future kingdom: it is in the now, but it operates according to the level of the Word in you. The Word makes faith swell like yeast in dough, so that where others say it cannot be done, you say all things are possible with God. People who receive healing and lose it often have not yet grown in the Word.
Illustration: Bakers cover a little dough with yeast in it, and all of a sudden it rises. That is what the Word does in your heart.
“God's rule and rulership is in the now.”
- John 15:7
- Romans 10:17
- Joshua 1:8
- Matthew 19:26
It's a word problem: faith is the force behind the words
Most believers dominated by problems do not have any other problem but a word problem: they have not renewed their minds and go by experience. Long-time churchgoers repeat 'praise the Lord, God is good' and then describe their problems, instead of saying 'thanks be to God who gives me the victory'. What gives power to spoken words is not volume but a faith-filled heart, because faith is a force and a spirit.
“It doesn't matter how loud you shout. For what really gives power to those words spoken is the faith force and the spirit behind it.”
- 1 Corinthians 15:57
- 2 Corinthians 4:13
The kingdom of God is at hand: your searching is over
Jesus preached the gospel of the kingdom, which means He preached God's power, authority and anointing: good news to the sick, the poor, and those who say they cannot preach, teach or lead a cell. 'At hand' means it is here, and also that you can reach out, touch it and operate it. There is enough power available to make you functional in the kingdom, so there is no excuse.
“The kingdom of God is at hand. That means you can reach out, touch it, feel it, operate it.”
- Mark 1:14-15
Death in the pot
In Elisha's day someone put poisonous gourds in the stew and the prophets cried, 'There is death in the pot.' Tradition and wrong teaching are death in the pot: the stew smells good and looks right, but it cannot give life. The anointing and revelation change it and bring life.
“It's tradition and it's wrong teaching that has brought death in the pot.”
- 2 Kings 4:38-41
The identity crisis: know who you are and what Papa God thinks of you
The church's biggest challenge, he had said in Phoenix that morning, is not what it has or lacks but an identity crisis. Righteousness is a crown, and kings and priests come into God's presence without intimidation or inferiority. You are a son, not a servant, adopted and loved as much as Jesus is loved, so your words and prayers carry weight. Your point of reference is not ethnic group, education or bank balance but acceptance in the Beloved, and the One who began a good work in you will complete it.
“You've got to know what Papa God thinks about you.”
- 2 Timothy 4:8
- Revelation 1:6
- 1 John 3:1
- Ephesians 1:6
- Philippians 1:6
- Isaiah 46:10
Born to dominate, so have holy audacity
A three-year-old acts as if Papa's car, the kitchen and the TV remote are his, because God created people to have dominion; parents should channel that, not kill it. Everyone is born with the potential to lead. Even unbelievers who know who they are take over and transform things, so believers with the Spirit who raised Christ from the dead must stop walking around apologising. If people working by other powers can advertise without apology, believers must stop doubting what God can do.
Illustration: On TV makeover shows a man sees a rusty old car, sees the real thing in it, and turns it into something shining with a brand new engine.
“Me and my Papa God, we can change this thing.”
- Genesis 1:26
- Romans 8:11
- Isaiah 10:27
Lay your hand on it: the kingdom is at hand
He calls two women forward and stretches out his hands as the power of God touches them, to show what 'at hand' means. Take a threatening letter into your prayer room and subdue it in Jesus' name. Students can lay hands on their books and plead the blood over their minds to retain what they study; accountants can lay hands on their work; and wherever your feet go, you carry the gospel of peace.
Illustration: Someone phones and asks him to pray, and he answers, 'Are you sure you want me to pray? Because when I say amen, you're going to get that thing.'
“You can lay your hand on anything and prophesy and decree and change it.”
- Philippians 4:13
- Colossians 1:27
- Ephesians 6:15
Putting it into practice
- Meditate on the Word until it is more real to you than your circumstances, then give it voice.
- Find the scriptures for your situation and grow your faith in that area.
- Stop repeating Christian phrases without faith behind them.
- Settle who you are in Christ and what God thinks of you.
- Lay your hand on your books, work and problems and decree God's power over them.
Closing
He demonstrates 'the kingdom of God is at hand' by stretching his hands towards two women he has called forward. He has the church declare that they function in the kingdom and that Christ in them is the hope of glory, gives practical examples for students and workers, and sends them out as carriers of the gospel of peace to Umlazi, KwaMashu, Phoenix, Pinetown and Chatsworth.
