Sermon outline
Believers overcome Satan by the blood of Jesus as they testify to what the Word says the blood does for them, so the obedient must take the blood out of the basin with their mouths and apply it to their homes, children and lives.
Main text
- Revelation 12:11
- Exodus 12:21-36
- 1 Peter 1:2
- 1 Corinthians 5:7-8
Opening
Continuing his series on developing faith for the miraculous, he says he wants to teach rather than preach and has the church read Revelation 12:11 aloud. He gives his own rendering: believers overcome Satan by the blood of Jesus Christ as they testify to what the Word of God says the blood does for them. He recaps the three elements, the blood, the Word and our testimony, and defines overcoming as subduing, conquering, prevailing and getting the victory.
Applying the blood
In Exodus 12 God told Israel to slay the lamb, catch its blood in a basin and apply it with hyssop to the lintel and doorposts. When the angel of death saw the blood it passed over, but where there was no blood the firstborn died. We must know what the Word says the blood does, because speaking it aloud makes it a living reality: God never planned for us to be silent believers.
“God did not plan for us to be silent believers. God had planned for us to overcome by our testimony.”
- Exodus 12:21-36
Obedience comes before the sprinkling of the blood
Peter writes to God's elect, strangers in this world, chosen 'for obedience and sprinkling by the blood': obedience comes first. In Egypt the blood protected only those who stayed inside the house, and today it protects those who stay under it. Gathering in church matters because of the corporate anointing, where one puts a thousand to flight and two put ten thousand, and because the Word washes us after a week of being defiled by the world.
Illustration: Your car needs a wash, and so do you. When the devil whispers that you are too tired for church, wake up and smell the coffee: he wants to separate you from the Word, and an ember separated from the fire soon dies out in the cold.
“The blood protects only the obedient. You are safe while you obey.”
- 1 Peter 1:1-2
- Deuteronomy 32:30
- Ephesians 5:26
Keep the house of God sacred
We are the temple of the Holy Ghost, yet the sanctuary is still a holy place where the blood, the angels and the anointing are present, not a place of fun and games. The tithe is holy unto the Lord, as are communion, marriage and hearing the Word. Everything in church must be Bible-based; he warns against a self-styled prophet seen on television spraying insecticide on worshippers, and explains that the church joined a larger body so it would stay accountable.
Illustration: He admires how Catholics treat going to church as sacred, almost walking on tiptoe, and says he has always given his tithe to the Lord, not to the pastor, never wondering what became of it.
“This is not just a place. This is a sanctuary of God.”
- 1 Corinthians 6:19
- Leviticus 27:30
- Luke 8:18
Eliminating sin
Before the blood was applied, every Jewish family removed all leaven from the house for seven days, and we too must purge out the old leaven. When the Holy Spirit convicts you of personal sin, repent and walk away from it, not under condemnation, because the blood forgives and grace can pull you out. This enables the blood to protect every area of your life.
“Eliminating sin from your personal lives is very important.”
- 1 Corinthians 5:7-8
Relying on the Lamb: your testimony is the hyssop
Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us and His blood has been shed, but the blood cannot protect us while it remains in the basin. Under the old covenant hyssop carried the blood to the doorposts; under the new covenant our testimony carries it to our homes, workplaces, children and marriages. That is why proclamations and declarations matter: they arrest spirits of poverty and sickness and speak life into situations.
Illustration: When a teacher writes off your child, go home and testify in Jesus' name that your child is bright and will be first in the class.
“The blood cannot protect us while it remains in the basin.”
- 1 Corinthians 5:7
- John 21:15-17
- Revelation 12:11
Speak blessing, not death, over your family
Many parents shout at their children and speak death over them, but the devil has an assignment against them and parents have the power in their mouths to lift them out of it. Jesus did not mete out punishment to us but grace, so don't label and box people: God may lift up tomorrow the one we laugh at today. Speak blessing over your marriage and your future, because today is not your forever status.
Illustration: A man with no money in his pocket goes home to a humble house and says, 'Lord, I'm trusting You for a five-bedroom house, a debt-free house, a better car': he is creating with his mouth.
“Use your mouth to bless them.”
- Deuteronomy 28:6
Putting it into practice
- Learn what the Word says the blood does and testify to it aloud.
- Walk in obedience and stay under the blood.
- Treat church, the tithe, communion and marriage as holy.
- Repent quickly when the Holy Spirit convicts you of sin.
- Speak blessing over your children, your spouse and your future.
Closing
He says his time is almost up and he will pick up the point again the following week, reminding the church that a pastor's task is to feed the sheep and that it is worth the drive to come and be fed. He urges couples to speak well of each other privately at home, has the church stand and closes with praise.
Declarations he led
- They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
In his words
- “Believers overcome Satan by the blood of Jesus Christ as they testify to what the Word of God says the blood of Jesus does for them.”
- “Your car needs a wash. You too need a wash.”
- “The blood is not sprinkled on the disobedient.”
- “Our personal testimony takes the blood out of the basin and applies it to our houses.”
- “Today is not the forever status. It will change tomorrow.”
