Dr RJ Sing, 1 hr 7 min
Originally preached as “You Are a Mountain Mover”
Sermon outline
Every believer carries the anointing and mountain-moving faith, so speak to your mountains, stay committed when the feeling fades, and do not faint.
Main text
- Mark 11:12-24
- Galatians 6:9
Opening
He opens by honouring his friend Pastor Andy Lamb of Cape Town, who had just passed away in his nineties, recalling how the old man insisted on pushing their luggage trolley at the airport as a servant, and leads the church in prayer for his family. He thanks the church for its loyalty and speaks as a father about staying planted in a local church. He explains that this is part two of his teaching on miracles, prompted when Pastor Zubeda read that one of the temple's pillars was called 'moving mountains'.
You are the church
A church grows through four stages: pioneering, pastoral, administrative and apostolic, when the leader steps back so leaders run the church and he can help pastors and write books. Signs, wonders and miracles should follow the believers, not only the pastor, and wherever you show up, there is church. A shepherd does not give birth to lambs; the sheep do, so the people will reach those he will never meet.
Illustration: Many who were healed in the early days at Matheron Road and North Coast Road took their miracle and left, like the lepers who never came back to thank Jesus, including a nurse healed of lupus who testified on TV and then returned to her old church.
“Wherever your feet will go, that is church.”
- Luke 17:12-18
- Mark 16:17-18
You carry the anointing, and it is for wisdom too
The power of God is resident in every believer, and his words carry spirit and life. That anointing is not only for healing but for wisdom in the marketplace, where decisions come fast and the pressure is on, and God will quicken you when you do not know what to do.
Illustration: He demonstrates the power of God on members standing at the front, and celebrates Lindo, who was retrenched and two weeks later found a job paying double, one of many promotions in the church during the pandemic.
“I have the wisdom of God.”
- John 6:63
Commitment is completing what no longer inspires you
People are fainting and giving up too quickly; fear of COVID keeps them from church though they go everywhere else. The excitement of any commitment fades with time, but faithfulness carries on, and in due season you will reap if you do not faint. He reminds them that 2021 is a year of favour, abundance and overflow, and that God elevates His people in the midst of trials.
Illustration: He recalls walking Pastor Zubeda home from school at 16 or 17, ducking and diving so no family member would see them, and teases couples in the church about their courting days: the inspiration fades, but the commitment remains.
“Commitment is completing what no longer inspires you.”
- Galatians 6:9
You are a mountain mover: speak to your mountain
Jesus spoke to a fig tree, so you can speak to your mountain. Sometimes nothing seems to happen at once, but the next day the tree had withered; have faith in God, because the faith lost at the fall was restored through Jesus, and God watches over His word to perform it. Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it.
Illustration: He tells of an evangelist, now 80, who prayed 19 years for an opening in a closed country until the government invited her to hold a crusade. On the cleansing of the temple, he says he will never allow Ponzi schemes, selling, or cake sales to raise money in the church.
“If Jesus spoke to a tree, you can speak to your mountains.”
- Mark 11:12-24
- Isaiah 56:7
- Jeremiah 1:12
- Daniel 3:17
- Psalm 75:7
Raise up a generation of Davids
Tell your children they can do anything good they set their hearts on, so they grow up knowing no Goliath can stand in their way. The same anointing that was on David is on you and your family. The Bible does not hide David's failures, yet God loved him, and your mistakes are forgiven and removed as far as the east is from the west.
Illustration: He never had a father who held him and said he could do anything, and his grandparents only shouted at the children. He and Pastor Zubeda saw the story of David on stage at a theatre in the United States, where young David says Goliath is too big to miss.
“The same anointing that was on David is the same anointing that's on you.”
- 1 Samuel 17
- 1 Samuel 18:7
- Psalm 103:12
- Romans 8:1
Putting it into practice
- Influence your own world, whether campus, workplace or trade, because you are the church.
- Speak to your mountain instead of giving up.
- Stay committed when the feeling fades, and do not faint.
- Tell your children they can do anything good and that God is with them.
- Keep knocking: if no one answers, knock again.
Closing
He tells the church they are unstoppable, that God will give them ideas and witty inventions, and pleads with them not to faint or grow weary. He thanks members who drive in from as far as Hillcrest for their commitment, reminds them that God is a loving God and not one with a big stick, has them declare that they are mountain movers, and pronounces the Aaronic blessing, pleading the blood of Jesus over their families, homes and businesses.
