Originally recorded as “Confirming the Word with Signs Following”
Sermon outline
Christ lives in every believer and God has already anointed you, so stop begging God from a distance and let Him speak, heal and bless through your words and hands.
Main text
- 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Opening
He announces his new book and its launch, thanks Pastor Adrian for preaching on Sunday and reports on the conference in Nigeria, where he preached twice. Prompted by the Holy Spirit, he first challenges the church that every believer has been called but many have not answered, and only then says he wants to speak 'briefly tonight about confirming the word with signs and wonders following'.
All of you have been called: stop being decorative jewellery
God did not save you to put you on a shelf as an ornament; He called you for a job, and one day He will ask whether you did it. You were born again of incorruptible seed and made a partaker of the divine nature, yet many still live as carnal Christians. Selfishness keeps people from serving, but whatever your profession, you can do your work and preach the gospel, and open your home to other believers.
Illustration: A lady puts on a piece of jewellery to look nice for an occasion, then takes it off and puts it away for a year or two. And: 'If you're a panel beater, yes, panel beat and preach the gospel. If you're a seamstress, sew and preach the gospel.'
“God did not save you to put you on a shelf as a decorative emblem to beautify the shelf.”
- 1 Peter 1:23
- 2 Peter 1:4
- Proverbs 29:25
- 2 Peter 1:21
You are in Christ, and Christ is in you
It is God who establishes us in Christ. You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body, your 'earth suit', so the real you is the recreated spirit man on the inside. Getting that revelation will catapult you to the next level, because you stop seeing yourself as merely human and see yourself as a God-man or God-woman.
Illustration: He asks people where they live: one says Newlands East, one Newlands West, and one says 'I live in Christ'.
“The real you is not you that I see. The real you is your spirit man on the inside.”
- 2 Corinthians 1:21
- 1 Thessalonians 5:23
God is not out in space: you are His temple
Religion tries to reach God at some distant point, fasting for 21 days and hoping He hears. Daniel's answer was delayed by the prince of Persia, but that was the Old Testament; Jesus has since triumphed over principalities, taken the keys and promised never to leave us. Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, so your hands, feet, eyes and mouth are God's, and wherever you show up, there is church.
Illustration: The believer who keeps fasting 21 days a year, thinking 'I'm like Daniel', and lives in a cycle of hopelessness while forgetting that Christ is in him.
“Everywhere you present yourself, there is church. You just have to show up.”
- 1 Corinthians 6:19
- Daniel 10:12-13
- Colossians 2:15
- Revelation 1:18
- Hebrews 13:5
- Matthew 28:20
- Matthew 5:14
When you speak, God speaks through you
When someone needs help, do not just say 'let us pray and trust God'; you have a mandate to speak. There is a boardroom inside you where Christ, the Holy Ghost and your spirit commune, and when words come out they create. Christians are not beggars but kings and priests, so stop praying beggarly prayers and use the authority you have been given.
Illustration: A man who drove him and Pastor Zubeda to meetings the year before asked for prayer to get married. He did not ask God to search for a wife; he told the man that this time next year he would be married. He had just received a voicemail inviting him to the wedding.
“Christians are not beggars. God's not created you to be a beggar.”
- Revelation 1:6
- Genesis 1:26
You are anointed, not going to be anointed
God has anointed us, sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Being anointed means being smeared with God's presence, and it rubs off on your car, home, office and clothes. Your hands are anointed, so money that passes through them multiplies and sowing is never a loss; your feet are beautiful because they carry the gospel; and as a child of God you cannot lose.
Illustration: At an airport restaurant the whole place was 'anointed' with cigarette smoke, so they turned round and left. In the same way a believer's presence fills a house, and a visitor's headache can leave just from being there.
“I'm not going to be anointed. I am anointed.”
- 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
- Acts 4:34-35
- Romans 10:15
God deals with us in the past tense
After the first healing he explains that the church has been immobilised by trying to get an anointing it already has, always putting blessing in the future tense. God has already blessed us, anointed us and given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. Become 'God-inside-minded', conscious that you carry the divine presence.
Illustration: A visitor with throat pain is healed as soon as he commands it, without a long prayer.
“For too long, the church has been immobilized because we thought we were trying to get anointing when we already anointed.”
- 2 Peter 1:3
- 2 Corinthians 1:20
The spirit world is more real than the material world
The Word of God has authority over sickness, doctors' reports and every material thing, but it needs a voice of faith to speak it. Speak to sickness to go and to promotion, money and favour to come, and do not be afraid to pray for people at work or in the street. Do not carry hatred or bitterness, because they cripple your faith; love makes your faith work.
Illustration: Some people are afraid even to speak to their car, yet Jesus spoke to a tree and to fish.
“Any hatred, any bitterness stifles your faith. It cripples your faith.”
- Mark 11:14
- 2 Timothy 1:7
- Galatians 5:6
Putting it into practice
- Answer God's call and find your place in the work of the church, whatever your profession.
- See yourself as a spirit in whom Christ lives, not as someone trying to reach a distant God.
- Speak words of faith over situations instead of only asking God to do something.
- Pray for people at work and in the street, and expect God to work through your hands.
- Get rid of hatred and bitterness so that your faith can work by love.
Closing
He ministers healing, prays for the congregation to be filled with the Spirit and prays for people who fear flying or lifts. He prophesies that 2008 will be 'a year of laughter' in which everything about them will double, gives words of knowledge, tells the leaders in Umlazi to find a building for a new church, and leads several people to Christ with Romans 10:9 before handing over to Pastor Nathan to close.
Declarations he led
- I refuse to be selfish. I refuse to be dormant. From today, I'm an active participant in the gospel of Jesus.
- You spirit of selfishness, I speak to you, you will not dominate my life anymore. You are now dead.
- I can create my own world. I'm not a beggar. I refuse to be a beggar. There's no beggarly element in me.
- I'm anointed.
- My feet are beautiful.
- I cannot be afraid. I am the anointed of the Lord. I do not operate with the spirit of fear, but of love, of power, and a sound mind.
- I refuse to walk in strife. I refuse to walk in bitterness. I refuse to walk with a twisted heart. My heart is full of the wisdom of God.
- My heart is my miracle garden. My heart is the production center. The issues of life proceed out of my heart.
- From today, I decide, I choose to walk in love, walk by the word of God, walk in humility, walk in faith, walk without fear.
In his words
- “God did not save you to put you on a shelf as a decorative emblem to beautify the shelf.”
- “I'm not employed by the church. And I'm not employed by man. I'm employed by God.”
- “Everywhere you present yourself, there is church. You just have to show up.”
- “Christians are not beggars. God's not created you to be a beggar.”
- “You're not just a Christian. You're a carrier of God's presence. You're a dispenser of God's grace.”
