Blood on Your Ear, Thumb and Toe: The Blood and the Oil

Dr RJ Sing, 1 hr 30 min

Originally recorded as “The Blood and the Anointing Oil: Prayer Meeting, 30 May 2008”

Sermon outline

The blood of Jesus applied by faith guards what you hear, blesses the work of your hands and steadies your walk, and the anointing always follows the blood as every believer's blood-bought right.

Main text

  • Leviticus 14:11-18
  • Hebrews 9:11-15
  • Hebrews 12:18-29

Opening

He opens in prayer, thanking God for the precious blood and the name above every name, and submits the meeting to the Holy Spirit. He leads the church in confessing that every need is met and every prayer answered, then explains that tonight will be a different prayer meeting: a brief word, communion, and anointing everyone with oil.

  1. You have your answers

He has the people tell God their needs and agree with him that they are granted, then confess as people of faith that they have received and the devil cannot steal it. God is already present, so they will not ask Him to come; where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty, and it is not by might nor by power but by His Spirit. He prays that all confusion will leave and they will have singleness of mind and purpose.

Illustration: He has them wave their Bibles to the Lord, as Israel gave a wave offering.

“We are not going to ask God to come. He's here.”

    • Philippians 2:9-10
    • Isaiah 54:17
    • 2 Corinthians 3:17
    • Romans 8:31
    • Zechariah 4:6
    • Psalm 119:105
  2. Anointing with oil: every oppression broken

There is nothing special in the oil itself; according to scripture it is symbolic of the Holy Spirit, and as he anoints them the Spirit touches them. During worship he anoints the people block by block, breaking off controlling spirits, tormenting spirits and any unholy spirit transferred by words or the laying on of hands, and declaring that God has forgiven those who thought they could not be forgiven. He urges those who are set free to stay in church, praying and worshipping among believers, so that oppression cannot return, and he senses a fragrance of God's presence in the room.

Illustration: A woman who had not been able to sleep for a year and a half because her mind kept racing testifies that her body is trembling and she can smell the fragrance of God.

“There's no special thing in the oil. Except that, according to the scripture, oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit.”

    • Hebrews 10:25
  3. Honouring the table of the Lord

While the people are still standing, he serves communion, saying it is hard to do this on a busy Sunday. He reads Paul's account of the Last Supper: the bread is a representation of the broken body of Jesus, and the cup of the new covenant in His blood, proclaiming the Lord's death until He comes.

“It's amazing what God will do for a hungry person.”

    • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
  4. With His own blood, a kingdom that cannot be shaken

Christ entered the most holy place once and for all, not with the blood of goats and calves but with His own blood, obtaining eternal redemption and cleansing the conscience from dead works. Believers have come not to a mountain of terror but to Mount Zion and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than Abel's, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. So there must be reverence and godly fear in the church: holy, consecrated lives, prayer, regular attendance and minds stayed on the word, having the mind of Christ.

“There must be reverence in the church and godly fear.”

    • Hebrews 9:11-15
    • Hebrews 12:18-29
    • Hebrews 10:25
    • 1 Corinthians 2:16
  5. The blood on the ear, the thumb and the toe

In cleansing a leper, the priest put blood on the tip of the right ear, the right thumb and the right big toe, and then oil on the same places. Applied by faith to the ear, the blood means the enemy's voice is drowned out and you become more conscious of the voice of Jesus, unlike David who complained of the voice of the enemy. On the thumb it blesses and multiplies the work of your hands, and on the toe it keeps your walk straight and steadfast in a contaminating world. Leprosy pictured sin, and believers have been cleansed and forgiven.

Illustration: He gave the church a morning prayer for applying the blood to their hearing, hands and feet, and hears a brother respond 'my wealthy place' as he prays.

“The voice you should be hearing is the voice of Jesus Christ.”

    • Leviticus 14:11-18
    • John 10:27
    • Psalm 55:2-3
  6. The anointing always follows the blood

He feels that even in the body of Christ the blood has been silenced, though it is vital, as is the Holy Spirit. Because the oil was always applied after the blood, those cleansed by the blood do not have to struggle for the anointing: it is their blood-bought right to walk in it in ministry and in whatever profession they follow. He leads them in confessing that their feet, hands and hearing are anointed.

“It is your blood-bought right to be anointed.”

    • 1 John 1:9
  7. The Spirit will drive you to pray

He prophesies that everything about them will multiply, that God will supply every need, silence those who come against them at work and be their strong tower. As the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, He will drive them to their solitary place to pray; racing minds will hear 'peace, be still' and choices will be guided by the Spirit. He tells them to lay hands on their doorposts and beds at home, prays a hedge of protection over their homes, and prays for the sick, the pastors and Sunday's services, reminding them that the anointing destroys every yoke.

“When you touch him, he touches you.”

    • Philippians 4:19
    • Proverbs 18:10
    • Mark 1:12
    • Mark 1:35
    • Mark 4:39
    • Job 1:10
    • Psalm 91:10
    • Psalm 107:20
    • Isaiah 10:27
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Putting it into practice

  • Each morning, apply the blood of Jesus by faith to your hearing, your hands and your walk.
  • Stay in church and among believers so oppression cannot return.
  • Live with reverence and godly fear, keeping your mind on the word.
  • Lay hands on your home and pray over it, and let the Spirit drive you to your place of prayer.

Closing

He reminds them of the book launch the following Saturday, invites them to bring someone on Sunday, and tells of plans for a crusade in Umlazi, perhaps in June, followed by others at the main church, Phoenix, town and Umhlanga, asking them to pray for souls. He blesses them and sends them home, prophesying that the spirit of prayer is upon them for the whole weekend.

Declarations he led

  • Every need I have, every desire I have is met in Jesus' name. So I have my answers. Every prayer of mine has been answered.
  • I will leave this place tonight with assurance in my heart that if God is for me no one can be against me.
  • I have it Lord. It's mine. Devil, you can't steal it from me.
  • I'm the son of the most high God. The Lord is with me tonight.
  • I have the mind of Christ.
  • My feet are anointed. My hands are anointed. My hearing is anointed. Wherever I walk, Satan cannot hinder me. I will overcome him each and every time.
  • It's my wealthy place. Money cometh to me. Favor cometh to me. The blessings of the Lord cometh to me.
  • I belong to God. I'm his sheep. I hear his voice. I'm not confused. Wherever I go, I have clarity of thought in Jesus' name.

  • “There must be reverence in the church and godly fear.”
  • “It is your blood-bought right to be anointed.”
