Sermon outline
God's wisdom, joined with sound reasoning and knowledge, leads believers into their wealthy place, so seek wisdom in prayer and the word, gain knowledge, take wise counsel and apply what you learn.
Main text
- Proverbs 3:13-16
- Proverbs 24:3-7
Opening
He opens with praise, praying in tongues and shouting the name of Jesus, reminding the church that believers have the power of attorney to use that name, and prays that the word will go out unhindered. He then hosts testimonies of answered prayer and healing from the past few days and prays for the sick, before a time of spontaneous worship in which he sings of the wonder-working God. After the testimonies he urges the church to be wise and to use their thinking faculties, which leads into his message.
Wisdom and reasoning together bring wealth
Wisdom is God's gift to the born again, but you must also engage your reasoning, common sense and logic; do not let them go to sleep, only do not let them stop your faith. Where wisdom and reasoning coexist, wealth is the automatic result. Keep a 'there is a way out' mentality, refuse to be idle, and build a revelation-expectant prayer life in which rhema jumps out of the written word and activates your faith to lay hold of God's resources.
“Where wisdom and reasoning, common sense, logic, exist, coexist, wealth is the automatic produce of that.”
- 1 Corinthians 1:30
1. God's wisdom is the principal thing
Happy is the one who finds wisdom: her profit is better than silver and gold, with length of days in her right hand and riches and honour, a wealthy place, in her left. There are three kinds of wisdom, heavenly, earthly and demonic, and true wisdom is a gift of God. Heavenly wisdom, God's hidden wisdom in a mystery, flows as you pray in tongues, bringing God ideas, witty inventions, concepts and insights.
“When you start speaking in tongues, you find that you get God ideas.”
- Proverbs 3:13-16
- 1 Corinthians 2:6-8
2. Wealth is found where wisdom dwells
The God of wisdom sheds light on your path so you know when to go left or right, and when to connect or disconnect. God gave Daniel and his friends knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom, but they also read and studied, so do not be lazy. All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in Christ. Joshua 1:8 says you will make your way prosperous, so choose wise, focused companions, stay focused at university, and make a savings plan instead of splashing your salary.
Illustration: Many boats are sailing in life, but not all are on course. Set goals such as owning your own car by 25 and your own house by 30.
“God didn't say in his word, according to Joshua 1.8, that he is going to make your way prosperous. He said, you will make your way prosperous.”
- Daniel 1:17
- Colossians 2:3
- Joshua 1:8
3. Through wisdom a house is built
A house is built by wisdom, established by understanding, and its rooms are filled by knowledge, not simply by prayer. Get knowledge from books, good educational programmes, the library and the internet, dream bigger than your boss, and wait for God's timing before you step out. A wise person is strong, and by wise counsel you wage your own war, because in a multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Illustration: Do not work for someone else for forty years only to retire with a gold watch.
“By knowledge, the rooms are filled. Didn't say by prayer.”
- Proverbs 24:3-7
Seek counsel before the big decisions
Before something big, especially marriage, talk to your parents, your pastor, a mentor or someone wise you trust, even if you do not fully agree with them; they raised you and want the best for you. A spouse without wisdom will destroy what you build, while a wise woman builds her house, and marriage means budgets and bills, not just a honeymoon.
Illustration: A young man asked his blessing to marry and would not wait six or twelve months as he advised; he says the man could not hear his counsel.
“When your pastors speak, listen.”
- Proverbs 14:1
Wisdom keeps what wealth brings
People who come into riches without wisdom and knowledge soon lose it all, so wisdom is needed not only to gain wealth but to keep it. Study the book of Proverbs, and wisdom and knowledge will come to you. He stops here and says he will continue the next week.
“Wisdom will bring you to a very wealthy place.”
Putting it into practice

- Confess that Christ has been made wisdom to you.
Closing
He leads a confession that Christ has been made wisdom to them and that they will dwell in their wealthy place, then announces a book launch on Saturday evening with a gospel jazz band and a meal, where he will autograph books. He releases the members who came by bus from Durban first and blesses everyone for a safe journey home and a week of expecting the supernatural.
