The Word of God – A Record of His Testimonies (Part 1)
Dr RJ Sing
“Blessed [are] they that keep his testimonies, [and that] seek him with the whole heart.”
The multifaceted Character of God’s Word is revealed by at least eight key synonyms for it, in the Psalms. We will now look at them:
- Law (Torah) is the most frequent of the words. It comes from the verb meaning, “to teach.”
- Testimonies (E’dot) emphasizes the content of the Word as that which God has testified of Himself and His will.
- Precepts (Piqudim), this refers to instructions from a superior regarding the duties of those under Him, in this case, from God to man.
- Statutes (Hugim), is related to the verb measuring “to engrave” and thus implies permanent and unchangeable regulations.
- Commandments (Mitswot) is a word assuming the authority of the commander and the inherent necessity of obeying the content of the charge. We will deal with the next three in the next devotional. We are definitely and positively required to love God and His Word without reservation.
*Deuteronomy 10:12, “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,” Therefore, we are to be doer’s of God’s Word and we are to seek Him with our whole heart
