Stop Trying to Get God's Attention: All Things Are Under Your Feet
Dr RJ Sing, 26 min
Originally preached as “Put All Things in Subjection Under His Feet”
Sermon outline
Christ has already done the work: God put all things under His feet, and because the church is His body, believers are seated with Him to rule over darkness by grace, not by trying.
Main text
- 1 John 4:4
- Ephesians 2:6
Opening
He welcomes viewers back to Life in the Spirit and thanks them for calls, letters and emails from Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Durban and Johannesburg. He shares testimonies of healing, including a man in ICU who was healed after a prayer cloth was taken to him, then asks viewers to get their Bibles, notepad and pen for the subject 'He put all things in subjection under His feet'.
1. Christ has already redeemed us from the curse
The greater One lives in you, so prayer, fasting and church attendance are good, but legally Christ has already done the work. He redeemed us from the curse, set us free from the dominion of darkness and cried 'It is finished'. We are seated with Christ in heavenly places, so we rule from a heavenly position instead of trying to get heaven's attention by our own righteous works.
“Every time you speak, it is like God speaking. Every time you pray, it is like Jesus praying.”
- 1 John 4:4
- Galatians 3:13
- John 8:36
- John 19:30
- Ephesians 1:3
- Isaiah 64:6
- 1 Corinthians 15:57
- Ephesians 2:6
2. You are over demonic spirits
God never intended the church to be under the power of darkness; He placed His church over it. You have power to cast out devils, heal the sick and loose people from bondage. Grow up from milk to meat, stop being tossed about by every wind of doctrine, and speak, pray and walk as a son of God without fear.
“Stop saying that I can't do and start to be a can-do person.”
- Ephesians 6:12
- Ephesians 4:13-14
- 2 Timothy 1:7
- Philippians 4:13
3. Stop trying: it is by His grace
You are engraved on the palms of God's hands and you are His temple, so you already have His attention. You are not weak: the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you and quickens your mortal body. In Christ you are complete, God always leads you in triumph, and you are a citizen of heaven, so walk, speak and decree like one.
“Do not try to get the attention of God. You have got His attention now.”
- Isaiah 49:16
- 2 Corinthians 6:16
- Romans 8:11
- John 1:16
- Colossians 2:9-10
- 2 Corinthians 2:14
- Ephesians 2:19
Do not forget who you are
God chose you before the foundation of the world, washed you in the blood of Jesus and saved you. God is in you and goes wherever you go, so practise His presence instead of searching for Him here and there. The more you practise His presence, the more you will see that every wicked power is under your feet.
“You are just not somebody that's been picked up from the wayside.”
- Ephesians 1:4
Study and meditate on God's Word
Meditating on the Word develops a sense that God is with you, which takes away stress and striving. He invites non-Christians watching to receive Jesus, the only way to God, who loved the world and chose them. In Christ you are more than a natural man or woman; you are His ambassador, and God is waiting on you to take your place rather than you waiting on Him.
“You do not have to wait on God. For God is waiting on you to take your place.”
- John 14:6
- John 3:16
- 2 Corinthians 5:20
You are the righteousness of God
You are righteous not because of your works or your family but because of Christ, and you have direct access to the throne room. If you miss the mark, confess it and He forgives and cleanses you, removing your sins as far as the east is from the west. Now rule and take dominion in Christ's stead.
“Every time you open your mouth to pray, you have direct access to the throne room of God.”
- 1 John 1:9
- Psalm 103:12
Putting it into practice
- Stop trying to earn God's attention; rest in what Christ has finished.
- Take your seat with Christ and exercise authority over demonic powers.
- Practise the presence of God, knowing He goes wherever you go.
- Study and meditate on the Word until you know who you are in Christ.
- If you have not yet received Jesus, pray and commit your life to Him today.
Closing
He invites viewers to write, phone or email their prayer requests and offers to pray over prayer cloths and post them, as Paul's handkerchiefs were used in Acts 19. He prays over the emails and faxes, asking viewers to reach out to the screen as a point of contact, binds infirmity and looses people from sickness, cancer, blindness and blocked ears.
