From Nothing and Nowhere: What God Did for Them, He Will Do for You

Dr RJ Sing, 26 min

Originally preached as “Mirell and Thamie's Testimony”

Sermon outline

The God who knew us before we were born has plans to prosper us, and what He has done for others He will do for you too, and more.

Main text

  • Jeremiah 29:11

Opening

Before his part, Thamie and Mirell share their testimony of what God has done in their lives since they joined the church. When they finish, he responds to the church and prays.

  1. Their testimony

Thamie tells how, soon after giving his life to the Lord, a friend invited him to a Wednesday service, where he was struck by the confident preaching. Week after week he learned the Word, was filled with the Holy Spirit after Pastor Zubeda's beginners' classes, and chose the pastors as his spiritual parents; he speaks of God opening doors in his civil engineering career and businesses, the home they stood in faith for, and passing demanding professional exams by meditating on the Word. He says that the more Pastor preached grace, the less he wanted anything to do with sin, and urges newcomers to stay. Mirell, raised in a religious home, describes the freedom she found in worship, her renewed mind, her growing fashion business and the answer to their greatest prayer, and encourages the church to trust God.

  2. Look at what the Lord has done

He reminds the church of the testimony given the week before and says this couple came from nothing and from nowhere, yet look at what God has done in their lives.

“He came from nothing and from nowhere. And look at what God has done in their lives.”

  3. God's plans are to prosper you

Before you were born God knew you and had a plan and a purpose for you. His plans are to prosper you, not for evil but for good, and though circumstances blow contrary, God will sustain you, even when what is happening in the world and in ministry shocks you.

“From before you were born, God knew you.”

    • Jeremiah 1:5
    • Jeremiah 29:11
  4. A God who is more than enough

He names God as more than enough: Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides; Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals; and the God of the breakthrough. What God has done for this couple He will do for you too, and more.

“And what God has done in their lives God will do for you too and more.”

    • Genesis 22:14
    • Exodus 15:26

Putting it into practice

  • Believe that what God has done for others He will do for you, and more.
  • Trust that God's plans for you are for good, even when circumstances are contrary.

Closing

He closes in prayer, cursing barrenness in the name of Jesus over anyone in the congregation facing it, and declares that it shall surely come to pass.

In his words

  • “He came from nothing and from nowhere. And look at what God has done in their lives.”
  • “From before you were born, God knew you.”
  • “And though that the circumstances may blow contrary, the wind is contrary, God shall sustain you.”
  • “And what God has done in their lives God will do for you too and more.”
