Unruffled and Unmoved: Know Your Position in Christ and Think Big

Dr RJ Sing, 15 min, Part 1 of The Authority of a Believer

Originally preached as “The Authority of a Believer, Part 1”

Sermon outline

A believer who knows his position in Christ stands unmoved by circumstances, thinks big like his big God, and refuses a slave mentality because Christ is made unto him wisdom and righteousness.

Main text

  • Ephesians 6:10
  • Ephesians 4:14-16
  • 1 Corinthians 1:30

Opening

The recording begins mid-flow as he tells the church that everything God has promised must come to pass. He reads Ephesians 6:10 in several translations, including the Message ('God is strong, and He wants you strong'), and 2 Corinthians 9:8, explaining that grace is unmerited favour that abounds towards you heap upon heap.

  1. God is strong and he wants you strong, with all grace abounding towards you

Grace is God's favour when you have done nothing to earn or deserve it. It does not merely come; it abounds, heap upon heap, from the moment you get up in the morning.

“It doesn't say, and God's grace comes. It says, and God's grace abounds.”

    • Ephesians 6:10
    • 2 Corinthians 9:8
  2. Be no more children tossed to and fro: the gospel of power

Not every gospel being preached is the true gospel. The gospel of the kingdom is good news with power in it: it brings light in darkness, provision in lack and healing in sickness. Men and laws change, but God watches over his Word to perform it.

“The word of God has power. It carries power.”

    • Ephesians 4:14-16
    • Jeremiah 1:12
    • 1 Samuel 3:19
  3. Every believer must know, comprehend and understand his position in Christ

Without knowing your position in Christ you will have no confidence to approach God, to pray or to believe a word he has spoken to you. Know it so thoroughly that you stand unruffled by retrenchment, an empty bank account, a failing business or a frightening diagnosis. If you stay on the Word, circumstances have to change; if you get caught up in the circumstances, they will toss you to and fro.

“You must know it so thoroughly that no matter what happens, you stand unruffled and unaffected by any circumstance.”

    • Isaiah 54:17
  4. Think big, because God is a big God

What you are trusting God for is small from his perspective: he can open a barren womb, fill a shrunken bank account and promote you while others are demoted. God cannot use small, mediocre thinking, so enlarge your heart, dig your ditches and step out of the boat.

Illustration: He told a businessman, while he and Mark were discussing the building, 'I will not beg you. I want nothing from you. My God will bless me', and even offered to bless the man with a holiday. He also jokes that you cannot even save a rat with pennies.

“The catalyst for God's power is a man or a woman that will think big thoughts.”

    • Proverbs 23:7
  5. Christ is made unto us wisdom and righteousness

You do not lack wisdom, even if you have not been trained in it, because Christ is made unto you wisdom, and he will tell you what to buy and whom to associate with. Christ is also your righteousness whether you feel it or not, so when the devil reminds you of past sin or says you are unqualified, answer that God has called and qualified you. Get rid of a slave mentality: be humble and kind, yet know you are large and in charge.

Illustration: Goliath was big and David was small, but it was not long before Goliath was down and David was up.

“Many Christians are in the church, but they have a slave mentality.”

    • 1 Corinthians 1:30
    • Isaiah 10:27
    • 1 Samuel 17

Putting it into practice

  • Learn your position in Christ until circumstances no longer move you.
  • Stay on the Word instead of getting caught up in circumstances.
  • Enlarge your thinking and take a step of faith, such as getting a licence or opening the business God spoke to you about.
  • Confess that Christ is your wisdom and righteousness, and ask God to deliver you from a slave mentality.

Closing

He shares that God has been challenging him in his own life to think big and passes the same challenge to the church, declaring there is nothing they cannot attain. He prophesies that, like Goliath and David, their big challenges will soon be down and they will be up. The recording ends abruptly.

Declarations he led

  • It must come to pass.
  • I have the wisdom of God.
  • Lord, forgive me. Deliver me from a slave mentality.
  • I'm large and in charge.
  • Money cometh to me. The blessings of God cometh to me. Goodness cometh to me.
  • I'm fat with the blessings of God.
  • I refuse to be down. I refuse to be average.

In his words

  • “If you are stayed on the word of God, circumstances will have to change because you're on the word of God.”
  • “God is not a small God. God is a big God.”
  • “You might have not been trained in wisdom. But being trained in wisdom and lacking wisdom are just two different things.”
  • “He didn't say you're the righteousness of God if you feel like it.”
  • “So if God calls you, you qualify.”
