The Importance of Speaking in Tongues – Part 4
Dr RJ Sing
“We are told in the ancient Scriptures that God would send men from other lands to speak in foreign languages to his people, but even then they would not listen. 22 So you see that being able to "speak in tongues" is not a sign to God's children concerning his power, but is a sign to the unsaved. However, prophecy (preaching the deep truths of God) is what the Christians need, and unbelievers aren't yet ready for it. “”
Tongues for a Sign, The people had overheard the disciples as they were filled with the Spirit and spoke with other Tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 1 Corinthians 14:21-22 is a good example of Tongues being a convincing sign to unbelievers.
Tongues for prayer, 1 Corinthians 14:2, “But if your gift is that of being able to "speak in tongues," that is, to speak in languages you haven't learned, you will be talking to God but not to others, since they won't be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be a secret.” (See 1 Corinthians 14: 14-15) The Spirit of God has provided Tongues, for us to pour out our hearts to God in prayer. (See Romans 8:26)
Tongues for Messages, Another purpose and use of the gifts of Tongues, is that it is a vehicle for messages to the church. When the whole church gathers, Tongues are one of the manifestations of the Spirit which is given to profit all present.
