Let Us Hold Fast: Reject Rejection and Keep Your Confession

Dr RJ Sing, 24 min, Part 5 of Steps to a Supernatural Year

This is the whole service. The video opens where he begins, at 1:24.

Originally preached as “Steps to a Supernatural Year, Episode 5”

Sermon outline

God has answered rejection with total acceptance in Christ, so hold fast the confession of your hope without wavering: say what God says, because Jesus is the High Priest of our confession and He who promised is faithful.

Main text

  • Hebrews 10:23
  • Ephesians 1:6
  • Hebrews 3:1

Opening

He recaps the steps so far, each a 'let us' from Hebrews: let us fear (4:1), let us be diligent (4:11), let us hold fast our confession (4:14), let us draw near to the throne of grace (4:16), let us press on to maturity (6:1) and let us draw near to the most holy place (10:19-22). On pressing on to maturity he says religious people remain infants because routine appeases their conscience, and he links the pledges people are writing that morning to faith towards God and to seedtime and harvest.

  1. The remedy for rejection is acceptance

One of the most terrible things the devil has served on people is rejection, and many adults who seem fine have been rejected fully or partially somewhere in life. It is often the root of anger in marriages and at work, and we patch the symptoms instead of laying the axe to the root. Christ's remedy is total acceptance: washed in the blood, we are accepted in the Beloved, endorsed, elevated and seated with Him in heavenly places.

Illustration: Full rejection is a child given up for adoption; partial rejection is an aunt who loved your brother but not you, parents with a favourite, or a teacher who always picked on you. Too often we put plasters on what we are dealing with instead of going to the root.

“Christ has given us a remedy for rejection. And the remedy that he has given us for rejection is acceptance.”

    • Ephesians 1:6
    • Matthew 3:10
    • Ephesians 2:6
  2. Step seven: Let us hold fast our confession without wavering

With Ephesians 4:13-16 as the series' foundation, he gives the seventh step from Hebrews 10:23. To hold fast is to take hold of, keep in memory, possess and seize; confession is an acknowledgement, our profession of what Jesus has already done. When the enemy throws condemnation and unworthiness at your mind, answer that you are blood-washed, sanctified and the righteousness of God in Christ, because poverty and condemnation are spirits that keep people bound, sometimes from childhood to old age.

“It's the Word of God that sets you free. It's the Word of God that keeps you free.”

    • Hebrews 10:23
    • Joel 3:10
    • 2 Corinthians 5:21
  3. Hope is an expectation, and God is faithful

Hope is an expectation that where you are this season is not where you will remain, because God is good, for you and not against you, and not looking to punish you. He lavishes His love on us, and His goodness leads us to repentance, not by condemning us but by making us embarrassed that His love transcends our silly mistakes; our fear of Him is reverential. God is faithful: if He said it in His Word or by prophecy He will do it, and He never forgets a prayer you have forgotten.

“If he said it, he'll do it.”

    • Romans 8:31
    • Romans 2:4
    • 2 Timothy 1:7
  4. Confession is saying the same thing as God

Confession is saying what God says, not what ideologies or tradition say: making the words of our mouth agree with the Word of God. Salvation is not the end of it; the Christian walk is a continuous advance towards complete agreement with the Word in every area of life.

“Confession is saying the same thing as what God says.”

  5. Your confession is linked to Jesus, your High Priest

Jesus is seated at the right hand of God interceding for us, but as High Priest He looks to His priests, for we are kings and priests, to see what they believe and say. Linked means related, joined and bound: He is there to make good every right confession, but He cannot help a wrong one. Hebrews 3:1 calls Him the High Priest of our confession, so what are you saying about your children, grandchildren, spouse and money matters?

“The more we say it, the more we'll receive it.”

    • Revelation 1:6
    • Hebrews 3:1

Putting it into practice

  • Reject all rejection and accept the fact that God loves you.
  • Deal with the root of rejection, not just the symptoms.
  • Use the Word of God to step out of condemnation and poverty.
  • Make the words of your mouth agree with God's Word.
  • Listen to what you say about your children, your marriage and your money, and change your confession.

Closing

He asks what people are saying about their families and finances and begins to tell how, years before, the Lord challenged him to make a bold confession in his prayer time; the broadcast ends there, and the story is told in Episode 6.

Declarations he led

  • In the name of Jesus, I reject all rejection and I accept the fact that God loves me.

In his words

  • “I have found one of the most terrible things that the devil has served on people is rejection.”
  • “Poverty is a spirit, and condemnation is a spirit.”
  • “God's love transcends even the silly stuff that we do.”
  • “God never forgets.”
  • “Whatever we say, he's bound to do.”
